But what is meant by patina?
Reading the catalogues of the auction numismatic and price lists at a fixed price of firms numismatic you can notice how, in certain specimens, attributed beautiful patinas.
The patina is a sort of veil colourful, often of a certain consistency, which is formed on the surface of the coin and comes from the chemical reaction of the metal with substances present in the air or underground.
For this to happen it must necessarily spend a lot of time (several years).
Due to the difference existing between a given soil or area compared to another, behold, are the colors of patina slightly different (the same color but different shades) or totally different (green, brown, red, blue).
Obviously, only the specimens in silver, or copper can boast a patina, while gold, which is tamper-proof, can not form.
The presence of a beautiful patina effect is also noticeable on the price, but for this to happen it must necessarily be:
- authentic and not to be obtained through chemical processes or otherwise;
- smooth, not patchy;
- of pleasing color.
The fouling is similar to the nature of the patina, but contrary to this, defacing the currency and thus decreases the value, because it is formed in the measure so high, it clear what lies beneath.
Although it is a negative aspect, commercially speaking, the fouling is of great importance as a tool of analysis to judge the authenticity of a sample.
